神の島・宮島は、1400年の長きにわたり、国中の人々の信仰を集めてきました。弘法大師・空海は、遣唐使を終えて京の都に上る途中に宮島の弥山に籠り、100日間の求問持秘法を修したと伝えられています。また平清盛は、平家の興隆を願って厳島神社を寄進し、豊臣秀吉は戦に果てた武士たちの魂を弔うために、大経堂として千畳閣建立を発願しました。
巨岩、奇石、原始の森の弥山を北に背負い、瀬戸内海の汀に浮かぶ厳島神社は、1996（平成8）年にUNESCO世界文化遺産に登録され、今では世界中の人々を魅了する観光地です。
