Kakezukuri

A unique Japanese construction method called Kakezukuri (懸造) is sometimes used at temples that stand on steep slopes or rocky hillsides. To keep the floor horizontal, carpenters use a special technique to adjust the pillars under the floor. The most famous example is the platform of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. In this series, we introduce some beautiful temple buildings that use the Kakezukuri method. Among hundreds of buildings of Kakezukuri in Japan, these five beautiful buildings that command splendid views of the local surroundings.
