The city also ranked highly on its nighttime visibility

Ask travelers what they remember most about a city, and chances are the skyline will feature somewhere on the list. Long after a trip ends, many people can still picture the illuminated towers of a city center or the distinctive silhouette that greeted them on arrival. A memorable skyline creates a sense of place, helping a destination stand out among the many cities people visit throughout their lives.

Now, a global study ranking the world's best skylines has given Tokyo something to celebrate, with Japan's capital earning a place among the world's top 10.

The research assessed cities around the globe using factors such as the number of skyscrapers taller than 150 meters, the average height of their tallest buildings, skyline density, award-winning architecture, and nighttime visibility. Tokyo finished in equal ninth place overall, sharing the position with Chongqing in China.

According to the study, Tokyo is home to 215 skyscrapers exceeding 150 meters in height, including 38 that rise above 200 meters. While the city doesn't boast the towering supertalls found in destinations such as Shenzhen or Dubai, its skyline remains one of the most recognizable in the world. The combination of modern high-rises, sprawling urban landscapes, and iconic landmarks has helped shape Tokyo's image for decades.

One area where the city truly shines is after sunset. Tokyo achieved a nighttime visibility score of 0.94 out of 1, placing it fifth worldwide for after-dark skyline views. It was also the only city to appear in both the overall top 10 skylines and the top 10 nighttime skyline rankings.

For anyone who has spent an evening exploring the capital, that result may not come as much of a surprise. From observation decks and rooftop bars to the view from an evening train ride, Tokyo's sea of lights creates a spectacle that leaves a lasting impression.
