Several years ago when Japan first started holding its annual winter illuminations, I was wondering how long the novelty factor would last since this is the country where many trends seem to come and go in the blink of an eye.

Fortunately, the population’s appetite for this winter spectacle certainly hasn’t dwindled. In fact, many people would argue that Tokyo’s winter illuminations (if not every city in Japan), has grown into something of an annual competition with each place now trying desperately to outdo its nearest neighbor with ever bigger and brighter displays. Despite this growing trend however, Marunouchi still manages to retain much of its original charm.

Tokyo’s Marunouchi’s illuminations have become one of the city’s star winter attractions and continue to hold their own against many of the bigger and newer competitors. Situated along the vast avenues of Naka-dori, Marunouchi’s Champaign colored lights contrast perfectly with the area's cobblestone streets and impressive sculptures. These colorful sights cannot help but to provide a warm boost and uplifting vibe to the long and cold wintery nights
