A historic Tokyo garden will take on a new life after dark this spring with a limited-time light-up event that blends art, history, and atmosphere. Held at the Kyu Shiba Rikyu Gardens, "Kyu Shiba Rikyu Night Gathering: Memories of the Garden Where Light Dwells" runs from May 20th to May 23rd, 2026.
Originally created in the early Edo period, Kyu Shiba Rikyu is a traditional stroll garden built around a central tidal pond. During the event, lighting specialists from Takasho Digitech will highlight features such as stone bridges, landscaped hills, and historic lanterns, guiding visitors through the space in a new way. As you walk through the grounds, subtle light effects recreate the feeling of water movement and changing tides, echoing the garden's original connection to Tokyo Bay.
A highlight of the evening is a light and sound performance held every 20 minutes from 7:00 pm, where the illuminated landscape comes together in a coordinated display. The result is less of a traditional sightseeing experience and more of a slow, reflective walk through history.
Located near central transport hubs, the event also ties into ongoing efforts to bring more nighttime activity to the surrounding waterfront districts. For visitors, it offers a chance to see a different side of Tokyo, which is quieter, atmospheric, and rooted in the city's past.
