Fukui's Tojinbo Cliffs
Larry KnipfingFukui's Tojinbo Cliffs are truly fascinating. Jutting out into the Japan Sea, they are at once, both beautiful and tragic.
The rocks called Tojinbo extend a whole kilometer along the coastline of Fukui. Shaped over the millennia by the powerful waves of the sea, they now offer a sight that is otherwise only found in two other places on earth. The rocks of Tojinbo apply hence as a natural monument.
The rocks have a five or hexagonal column shape and have a lot to offer lovers of coastal regions. For example, there is the option to visit the small island of Oshima, which is easily accessible from the Tojinbo coastline. This can even be done on foot along the hiking trail from Komegawaki. Also popular with locals are the so-called Nami no hana "flowers of the waves" which are flower-like structures made of sea foam that are formed by the waves in winter.
