Summer in Japan is famous for fireworks festivals, but one corner of Niigata Prefecture offers a different kind of evening spectacle. The Ojiya Hotaru Illumination transforms the city with thousands of glowing lights inspired by the gentle flicker of fireflies, creating a magical experience after sunset.
The annual summer event sees around 10,000 illuminated "PET Bottle Fireflies®" installed along the right bank of the Shinano River near the eastern end of Asahi Bridge. Visitors can stroll through a giant illuminated maze before taking in colorful light displays that shimmer across the riverside landscape.
Unlike traditional illuminations, the display uses environmentally friendly solar-powered LED lights housed inside recycled PET bottles. As darkness falls, the lights automatically change color every 15 minutes, creating an ever-changing display that glows for several hours each evening.
Beyond its visual appeal, the event also carries a heartfelt message. Ojiya Fireflies was created to commemorate the city's recovery from the Chuetsu Earthquake while expressing gratitude for the support it received. It also became a symbol of hope for communities affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake after Ojiya received around 15,000 "Pet Bottle Fireflies®" from Wajima City, whose own annual illumination event was canceled following the disaster.
For travelers exploring Niigata beyond the region's famous ski slopes and sake breweries, the event offers a memorable summer evening experience. Combining sustainable technology, community spirit, and a beautiful riverside setting, it's a unique way to discover another side of the prefecture after the sun goes down.
