総門から巨大な三門をくぐれば、長い長い石畳が参拝者を寺域の奥へと誘う。円覚寺は、主要な建物が一列に並ぶ禅宗様伽藍配置を擁し、左右に19の塔頭が帰属する大寺院である。1282（弘安5）年、鎌倉幕府の八代執権、北条時宗は、二度に渡る元寇で失われた多くの命を追悼するため、円覚寺を建立した。鎌倉五山の第二位に定められており、開山の無学祖元以下、夢窓疎石、東明恵日などの高僧が歴代の住持を勤めた。
