In Kusatsu—an isolated onsen village tucked into the mountains of Gunma—the pace of everyday life might be subdued, but it is by no means static.
At the town center, dense plumes of scalding steam rise through the air. The faint smell of sulfur is unmistakable, wafting from where the pale turquoise water spills and bubbles from the hot water field, frenetic and seemingly alive.
