Each spring, the riverside in Maniwa becomes a picturesque destination for cherry blossom viewing during the Tenryo Kuse Cherry Blossom Festival. Set along the banks of the Asahikawa River, the event highlights one of the area's most scenic seasonal sights: a pathway of sakura that forms a natural canopy of blossoms.
Around 180 Somei Yoshino cherry trees line a roughly one-kilometer stretch of the riverbank near the well-known Kuse Tunnel cherry blossom area. When the trees are in full bloom, their branches extend over the path to create the appearance of a "cherry blossom tunnel," a striking corridor of soft pink flowers that draws visitors from across the region.
The festival celebrates this seasonal display with a relaxed riverside atmosphere where visitors can stroll beneath the blossoms and enjoy the changing scenery as spring unfolds. The area is especially known for its peaceful countryside setting, offering a quieter hanami experience compared with some of Japan's more crowded viewing spots.
In the evening, the landscape takes on a different character as around 160 lights illuminate the pathway from sunset until around 9:00 p.m. The gentle lighting highlights the blossoms against the darkening sky, making nighttime walks along the river particularly atmospheric.
