JR East's Luna Azul To Launch in 2027

A train that aims to make the journey an experience in its own right

Train travel is one of the first things many visitors associate with Japan, and for good reason. From the speed of the shinkansen to scenic local railways winding through the countryside, getting from A to B often becomes a memorable part of the trip itself. Soon, travelers will have another unique way to explore the country, with JR East set to launch its brand-new overnight limited express, Luna Azul, in early 2027.

Named after the Spanish phrase for "blue moon," Luna Azul has been designed to offer a more leisurely style of travel. Rather than simply transporting passengers between destinations, the train aims to make the journey an experience in its own right, with an emphasis on comfort, relaxation, and a sense of escape from everyday life.

The 10-car train will initially operate overnight between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Aomori Station, traveling via the scenic Joetsu and Uetsu lines. Services are expected to run twice a week from spring through autumn, with journeys taking between 12.5 and 15 hours. Evening departures from Tokyo and morning arrivals in Aomori make it an appealing option for travelers looking to maximize sightseeing time while avoiding a hotel night in transit.

During winter, Luna Azul will switch to daytime services between Shinagawa and Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi in Gunma Prefecture, providing a comfortable route to one of Japan's popular hot spring regions.

While full pricing and onboard service details are still to come, JR East says fares for a private Green Car compartment on the overnight route will be roughly comparable to a Green Car ticket on the Tohoku Shinkansen, with a small premium. Drinks and snacks will also be available for purchase onboard, and the train is expected to be sold as part of travel packages.

For visitors planning a longer Japan itinerary in 2027 and beyond, Luna Azul looks set to revive the romance of overnight rail travel with this slower, more immersive way to discover northern Japan.
